How can Artificial Intelligence be introduced into secondary school classrooms in a practical, structured and accessible way?

FUTURE-STEM-HUB presents the E-Toolkit for School Educators: Enhancing AI Skills, a new educational resource containing 12 AI lesson plans for teachers. The toolkit provides practical methodological support for incorporating Artificial Intelligence into secondary school STEM education.

The resource has been developed as part of the Erasmus+ project FUTURE-STEM-HUB, which aims to make AI education more accessible to students and provide educators with the tools and confidence required to introduce this rapidly evolving field into their teaching.

Practical AI lesson plans for teachers

The E-Toolkit helps teachers transform Artificial Intelligence concepts into structured classroom activities. Its 12 lesson plans complement the introductory and advanced learning materials developed by FUTURE-STEM-HUB and support their practical application in the classroom.

Each lesson plan provides teachers with a clear framework for preparing, delivering and evaluating an AI learning activity. The plans include:

  • Learning objectives and intended outcomes.
  • Required prior knowledge and learning context.
  • Guidance for setting up the learning environment.
  • Teaching and learning resources.
  • Direct instruction and guided practice.
  • Practical classroom activities.
  • Assessment methods.
  • Opportunities for reflection and discussion.

This structure makes it easier for educators to plan their lessons while allowing them to adapt the content to their students’ age, experience, learning needs and level of digital competence.

Supporting the integration of AI into STEM education

Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant in education, employment and everyday life. Nevertheless, introducing AI into secondary school education can be challenging when teachers do not have appropriate teaching materials or specialised methodological guidance.

The AI lesson plans for teachers respond to this need by providing ready-to-use educational structures that connect AI concepts with practical STEM learning.

The toolkit can support both educators who are beginning to explore Artificial Intelligence and teachers who already have experience in STEM or programming. Activities can be selected and adapted according to the classroom context and incorporated into existing subjects, workshops or interdisciplinary projects.

More than technical knowledge

AI education is not limited to programming. Students also need opportunities to understand how AI systems work, explore their applications and consider their influence on society.

Through the FUTURE-STEM-HUB resources, learners can strengthen skills such as:

  • Computational thinking.
  • Problem-solving.
  • Creativity.
  • Digital competence.
  • Communication and collaboration.
  • Critical reflection.
  • Responsible use of technology.

The lesson plans support an active learning approach in which students can explore ideas, participate in guided activities, solve practical challenges and reflect on what they have learned.

Complementing the FUTURE-STEM-HUB courses

The E-Toolkit is the third main educational result developed by FUTURE-STEM-HUB. It complements the project’s two sets of student learning materials:

  1. Introduction to AI: Interactive Educational Materials, which introduces the foundations, applications and ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence.
  2. Advanced AI: Hands-On Learning Materials Using Python and Scratch, which enables students to explore AI through programming, games and practical digital projects.
  3. AI Methodological Guiding for Teachers, which helps educators transform these resources into structured classroom learning experiences through 12 lesson plans.

Together, these results create a complete educational pathway: students can learn about AI and experiment with practical applications, while teachers receive the methodological support needed to guide the learning process.

Available in six languages

The E-Toolkit and its 12 AI lesson plans for teachers are available in six languages:

  • English.
  • German.
  • Spanish.
  • Bulgarian.
  • Turkish.
  • Portuguese.

The multilingual format supports the use and adaptation of the materials by schools and educators in different European countries.

Building teachers’ capacity in AI education

In addition to creating the E-Toolkit, FUTURE-STEM-HUB has organised training activities to help educators develop the skills and confidence needed to teach AI-related topics.

The Transnational Facilitator Training Workshop held in Barcelona and the subsequent workshops organised with educators provided opportunities to explore the project materials, test activities and share teaching practices.

This combination of practical training, adaptable lesson plans and multilingual educational resources contributes to building sustainable capacity for AI education beyond the duration of the project.
