Final Event of OPEP DV in Tallinn: A Step Forward in Addressing Domestic Violence
The final event of the OPEP DV project (Online Professional Education for Physiotherapists on Domestic Violence) recently took place in Tallinn, marking the culmination of an important initiative aimed at equipping physiotherapists with the necessary tools to identify and support victims of domestic violence.
The event served as a platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences regarding gender-based violence and its intersection with physiotherapy. Professionals from various backgrounds engaged in discussions, highlighting the crucial role physiotherapists can play in recognizing signs of domestic violence and providing appropriate assistance.
With six partner organizations collaborating on this initiative—University of Tartu (Estonia), Tartu Health Care College (Estonia), M&M Profuture Training S.L. (Spain), Union of Women Associations of Heraklion Prefecture (Greece), Women’s Support and Information Centre (Estonia), and Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (Cyprus)—the project has reinforced the pressing need for training and awareness in this field. Participants unanimously acknowledged the relevance of the program, emphasizing that physiotherapists require specialized knowledge to support victims effectively.
Key Outcomes of the OPEP DV Project:
- Development of an online training course for physiotherapists, equipping them with strategies to identify and assist victims of domestic violence.
- Increased awareness among physiotherapy professionals about the role they can play in addressing domestic violence.
- Strengthening of interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare professionals and support services.
- Creation of open-access educational materials to facilitate continued learning and awareness beyond the project’s completion.
As OPEP DV reaches its conclusion, the project team acknowledges that the work does not end here. This course represents only the first step in a broader effort to integrate domestic violence awareness into physiotherapy education and practice. The question remains: How can we continue to support professionals in this endeavor?
