🎭 Theatre and Social Media Awareness in Barcelona: Erasmus+ Training Uses Theatre to Promote Empathy and Responsible Digital Behaviour

From 21 to 23 April 2026, Barcelona hosted the 3rd Learning, Teaching and Training Activity (LTT) of the Erasmus+ KA210 project “Harmonizing Social Transformations: Mitigating the Negative Effects of Social Media through Art”.

The international training brought together teachers and educators to explore how theatre methodologies can help address social media challenges, cyberbullying, emotional wellbeing and digital behaviour among young people aged 14–19.

The mobility focused on using theatre not only as an artistic discipline, but also as an educational and inclusive tool capable of fostering self-awareness, empathy, emotional expression and healthier online habits.

🎭 Theatre Methodologies for Education and Emotional Awareness

During the three-day programme, participants took part in practical and reflective activities designed to explore the relationship between online behaviour and real-life social interaction.

The training included methodologies such as:

  • Mirror Theatre
  • Role-playing activities
  • Character creation
  • Forum Theatre
  • Meditation and collective storytelling
  • Inclusive theatre exercises

One of the most engaging activities was The Magic Orb, a theatre-based role-playing exercise where participants explored concepts such as influence, validation, emotional dependence and social dynamics. Through this activity, teachers reflected on how social media platforms affect behaviour, attention and interpersonal relationships.

The programme also introduced Forum Theatre techniques inspired by Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, allowing participants to analyse online conflicts and collaboratively rehearse alternative responses and solutions.

🤝 Inclusive Theatre and Group Participation

A central element of the training was the inclusive theatre approach. The activities were designed to create safe and participatory environments where all participants could contribute regardless of their confidence level or previous theatre experience.

Teachers explored strategies to:

  • encourage participation
  • develop empathy and active listening
  • strengthen group cohesion
  • support emotional expression
  • facilitate reflection on digital behaviour

The training also focused on practical classroom application, helping educators adapt theatre methodologies to different educational contexts and student profiles.

🌍 Erasmus+ Project Promoting Positive Digital Citizenship

This activity forms part of the Erasmus+ KA210 project dedicated to reducing the negative effects of social media through artistic and participatory educational approaches.

By combining theatre, emotional learning and collaborative reflection, the project aims to empower teachers and students to build healthier relationships with technology and promote more responsible online behaviour.

As part of the final outcomes, participants collaborated on the development of a mini-booklet containing theatre-based activities and practical guidance for classroom implementation.
