FUTURE-STEM-HUB Project Kick-off Meeting in Viana do Castelo: Empowering STEM Education with AI and ML

The FUTURE-STEM-HUB project, aimed at enhancing secondary school STEM education through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) training, held its inaugural meeting on December 10th and 11th, 2024, in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. This gathering marked the beginning of a collaborative effort to equip educators and students with essential AI competencies.

Project Overview

FUTURE-STEM-HUB seeks to bridge the gap in secondary education by integrating AI and ML into STEM curricula. The project’s objectives include:

  • Developing comprehensive educational materials that introduce fundamental AI concepts.
  • Fostering awareness and discussion on the societal and ethical implications of AI.
  • Providing resources and training for educators to effectively teach AI and ML topics.
Consortium Partners

The project brings together a diverse group of partners, each contributing unique expertise:

  • Universität Duisburg-Essen (UDE), Germany: Serving as the project coordinator, UDE brings extensive experience in educational research and STEM initiatives.
  • ETAP – Escola Profissional, Portugal: As the host of the kick-off meeting, ETAP plays a crucial role in implementing project activities at the secondary education level.
  • Kütahya İl Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü (KUTAHYA MEM), Turkey: This regional education authority contributes insights into curriculum development and teacher training.
  • TETRA Solutions, Belgium: Specializing in educational technologies, TETRA Solutions supports the creation of digital learning platforms and resources.
  • M&M Profuture Training, S.L., Spain: Based in Barcelona, this training provider offers expertise in Erasmus+ projects and vocational education.
Meeting Highlights

During the two-day meeting, project partners engaged in discussions and workshops focused on establishing a clear roadmap for the project. The meeting began with an introduction to the project’s goals, activities, and timeline, followed by partner presentations and an in-depth discussion on administrative and financial procedures. Key topics included the development of the Digital Primer: Artificial Intelligence Essentials course structure, a collaborative brainstorming session on educational materials, and strategic planning for project communication and dissemination. Additionally, partners shared draft educational materials and explored methods to integrate AI topics into secondary school curricula effectively. The meeting concluded with a review of upcoming tasks, deadlines, and the scheduling of future meetings to ensure the project’s continued progress.
